![]() ![]() The lunar calendar is explained, along with other approaches to timing and selecting dates. ![]() ![]() Special attention is given to crafting a localized and individualized practice that both fulfills religious obligations and results in personal enjoyment and spiritual connection. Komos first explains the nature of ancient Greek festivals and the reasons they were observed, before moving forward to offer ways in which the same ideas and motivations can be expressed through modern celebrations. And yet our desire to honor the gods, explore themes such as purification, fertility and renewal, and mark the sacred progression of the year, remains as strong as ever. Many of us are doing this alone or with only a few other people, unable to achieve the lavish processions, competitions or revels of times past. ![]() We struggle to maintain an authentic connection to tradition while creating relevant practices which reflect our own relationships to the gods and spirits, as well as to the lands where we live now. Festivals were one of the most important aspects of ancient Greek religion, and yet celebrating them - whether adaptations of historical rites or entirely new ones - can be difficult for contemporary Hellenic polytheists. ![]() Lost in shangri la by mitchell zuckoff6/12/2023 ![]() Caught between spear-carrying tribesmen and enemy Japanese, they trekked down the jungle-covered mountainside and straight into superstitious natives rumored to be cannibals.ĭrawn from interviews, Army documents, photos, diaries, and original film footage, Lost in Shangri-La recounts this true-life adventure for the first time. ![]() But when the plane crashed, only three pulled through to battle for survival.Įmotionally devastated and badly injured, the trio faced certain death. In 1945, twenty-four American servicemen and women boarded a plane to see “Shangri-La,” a beautiful valley deep within Dutch New Guinea. Lost in Shangri-La: A True Story of Survival, Adventure, and the Most Incredible Rescue Mission of World War II ![]() Victory by susan cooper6/12/2023 ![]() ![]() I did appreciate both it’s message and how it was delivered in an adventure story. Victory is meant for children around the ages of eleven or twelve and so as an adult reader it was too simplified for true enjoyment. That Molly and Sam have another connection becomes clear at the end of the book, and this connection helps Molly to realize that wherever her family is, that will always be home for her. The author’s descriptions of life aboard this navy vessel and the actual battle were well done. The story moves quickly, alternating between the two children and I confess I found Sam’s story far more interesting, as, I suspect did my grandson. Inside this envelope is a piece of the flag that flew from the Victory. This isn’t a time travel book, the two children are linked by the fact that Molly purchases a older book, a biography of Nelson and finds an envelope glued under the cover. The main characters are two children, English Molly trying to overcome homesickness and get used to living in America, and Sam, a young boy who is pressed into naval service and becomes a powder monkey aboard Nelson’s flagship, the HMS Victory. ![]() Julian gore6/11/2023 ![]() Indeed Vidal spent years researching the life of Julian and famously published a bibliography of reference material at the end of the text to serve as a guide to critics and scholars. The novel is known for its vivid detail in bringing the Ancient World to life, and especially for its portrayal of Roman society without the Hollywood History typical of most historical recreations. Despite early successes in his reign, Julian's headstrong and superstitious nature begins to affect his decisions, culminating in a disastrous invasion of the Sassanid Empire, and his death. The memoir, with margin notes by Libanius and Priscus, tells Julian's story covering his youth as a royal hostage to his ascension to Caesar and then Emperor. His old teacher Libanius bemoans this and proposes to Julian's old friend Priscus that they write a biography using Julian's unfinished memoir. Seventeen years after Julian the Apostate, so-named for his efforts to revive Hellenistic paganism, was slain on the battlefield, Nicene Christianity has become the state religion. ![]() Julian is a 1964 historical novel by Gore Vidal. ![]() Rose madder cover6/11/2023 ![]() Singapore, 1936 -1997) early years were spent in Singapore and Malaysia. In Ladder Series, 1972, Lim uses line and repetition on the etching plate to create ‘ladder’ shapes through negative space on paper. For example, organic, circular forms in her etchings of the late 1960s and early 1970s were later reflected in a large commission in stone, Spiral III, 1983. The two influenced each other, with print-making allowing her to reveal in two-dimensions that which is impossible in the three-dimensional object and visa versa. Her concerns in her sculptural practice, privileging space, rhythm and light over volume and weight, were mirrored in her explorations as an accomplished print-maker. Rose Madder (Red Disc) was created by Kim Lim in 1970 and is one of five limited edition prints generously made available by the estate of the artist in support of Tate.įrom her studies at the Slade onwards, Kim Lim was equally committed to sculpture and printmaking. ![]() A light in the attic poems6/11/2023 ![]() ![]()
Run To You by Georgia Beers6/11/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() While I do love all of the choices (and I read from many, many different genres), when all is said and done, I still cannot resist a solid romance. If there’s a genre you like, you’ll probably be able to find it in Lesbian Fiction. How about ghost stories? Sweet, because there are some really good ones out there. Enjoy sinking your teeth into a good vampire story? Yep, lots of those, too. (And I have no doubt that we’ll be adding categories in future years.) Like a good mystery/thriller? Not a problem. ![]() Heck, in the last 10 years alone, the Golden Crown Literary Society has gone from giving out awards in 3 categories to giving out awards in 13 categories. The really wonderful thing about Lesbian Fiction is that it has really become pretty diverse in terms of genre.Yes, I think we still have a way to go, but there are more options to choose from today than there were in, say, 2000. ![]() Betsy tacy series6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() From the dubious culinary achievement of the "Everything Pudding," to the (inevitably) disastrous consequences of making hair lockets to remember each other by, the episodes chronicled here are guaranteed to win a smile and a chuckle from all but the most hardened reader. As is only fitting in a novel truly meant for children, adults are a continuous a source of mystery and confusion. A worthy follow-up to Betsy-Tacy, Maud Hart Lovelace's first book about two (eventually three) young girls growing up in late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Minnesota, Betsy-Tacy and Tib is a humorous and heartwarming celebration of childhood friendship, and only increased my appreciation of the characters, the author, and the series.Picking up roughly two years after the first title, when Betsy Ray, Tacy Kelly and Tib Muller are eight years old, it follows the three best friends through many hilarious adventures. ![]() ![]() ![]() Broad, but multiple abstractions may not help to illuminate concepts – it becomes necessary to whittle eclectic definitions and examples down.
